GO 111 Catchment since 1996 has been Scrapped and New Guidelines to be issued.
Nearly 1.32 Lakh acres of land from 84 villages is released from the development regulations that were imposed in 1996 in order to protect the Flora and Fauna near the two major waterbodies in Hyderabad by the scrapping of the GO 111. Government justification to this decision was that the Water usage from Osman Sagar and Himayatagar reservoirs in 1996 was 27.5% and now it is down to 1.25%. An expert committee is looking into implementing this in a phased manner while keeping in mind the protection of the lakes from pollution and concrete urbanisation. Currently, Hyderabad is the only city that has no FSI restrictions. Locals who own land in the area cannot ask for more as they anticipate a huge financial uplift ,however they are also worried about the damage the urbanisation causes. They also propose that a cap for the FSI in Hyderabad in needed to limit the pollution that is caused by development and to save the water bodies from encroachment in the area.
